A cultura do milho é praticada por pequenos produtores, em plantios solteiros e, muitas vezes, em consórcio, utilizando baixo nível tecnológico, tendo como resultado baixa produtividade. A atividade é desenvolvida por mais de 20 mil produtores, cultivada em mais de 40 mil hectares e se constitui na base da alimentação familiar e de importância econômica e social. Atualmente 17 municípios formam a principal região produtora de milho que já foi composta por 25. A dificuldade financeira e a pouca disponibilidade de semente variedade no mercado, levam os produtores a adquirirem materiais genéticos de qualidade duvidosa, não indicados para o modo de produção familiar. Diante da situação encontrada, foi desenvolvido um trabalho de incentivo à produção de
alimentos básicos com a introdução de materiais genéticos de milho adaptados às condições dos municípios visando um aumento da produção dos produtos da agricultura familiar, favorecendo a mais de 5.000 agricultores no período de 2010 a 2014.
Maize is practiced by small producers, in single crops and often in partnership, using low technology, resulting in low productivity. The activity is developed by more than 20 thousand producers, cultivated in more than 40 hectares and constitutes the basis of familypower and economic and social importance. Currently 17 municipalities form the main producing region of maize that was already made up 25. The financial difficulty and the limited availability of seed variety in the market, lead producers to acquire genetic material of dubious quality, not suitable for family production. Given the situation found a work to encourage the production of staple foods with the introduction of genetic material of maize adapted to the conditions of municipalities seeking an increase in production of products of family farming was developed by encouraging more than 5,000 farmers from 2010 to 2014.
